Email Councillor Williams

Dear Councillor Williams ,

I understand you intend to demolish the Hemel Hempstead Market Structure because

1) anti social behaviour ,

2) CCTV cannot be seen under the canopy ,

3) the market looks tatty

These three reasons which you seem to think of as being severe , are in fact quite trivial and cannot be the justification for demolishing a building structure which I am told cost £1.5 million to put up .

WHAT IS THE REAL REASON TO DEMOLISH A VIABLE STRUCTURE THAT COULD EARN REVENUE FOR THE COUNCIL , AND WHY HAS THE COUNCIL NOT CONSULTED ANYONE OVER THIS

1) I understand that as result of ASBOS antisocial behaviour has decreased significantly

2 ) Put a camera under the canopy , don't demolish a structure that cost £1.5M for the cost of a camera !

3) it is only because you and your council don't spend any money on maintenance

Shouldn't you and your council be finding ways to use this expensive asset and not demolishing it now , as the redevelopment of the area must be receding into the distant future , and it is very doubtful if you could find much use for a large empty paved area , except skateboarders and footballers who would love it , your "events" whatever they are , will not be successfull in the British climate ,

Thousands of people visit Hemel every year to go to this market , they come from all of the surrounding areas , they come for the market , they then go on and shop in Hemel probably spending £1m per year or more in the Market and the town , as one lady from Watford said " I wouldn't shop in Hemel except for the Wednesday Market , I would shop in Watford as all the same shops are there.

The Wednesday market gives Hemel a unique selling attraction and I am sure if you contacted local retailers the footfall on a Wednesday would be significantly higher than other weekdays
